Chicano Creative Society NeLA Community Project (This proposal was created by David Feria, Director @ Red X Productions and founder of the Chicano Creative Society) To Whom It May Concern, My name is David Feria, and as a proud Chicano artist and native son of Los Angeles, it is my passionate belief that we are overdue for a creative renaissance. Due to factors including a pandemic and a year-long Industry strike, the worlds of media and filmmaking are going through a major transition period. I believe that is why it is in our, Latinos’/Hispanics’, best interests to take the initiative and cudgel those doors of industry open for those of us who have long been mere observers of the magic taking place in our own backyards. Latinos will soon be the minority-majority demographic in the United States, the great media conglomerates (Paramount, Fox, etc.) are splintering and have lost control to the streamers and social media, and that means it’s our turn. We’re witnessing the potential birth of a new era of Latin art and expression, and we want to help platform said creators. The current landscape presents an unprecedented opportunity for our community, which makes up 50% of the population of Los Angeles but only 5% of the industry defining this city. My struggle, my life’s work for the foreseeable future, will be to create more opportunities for people who look like my friends and family and neighbors to express themselves artistically. Moreover, I want to share their gifts with the world and foster cultural exchange that invites us into each other's homes and hearts and lives. This all brings me to the following, humble proposition of the ‘Northeast Los Angeles Community Project’ (also known as the 'NeLA Entertainment Project’): Our curriculum and workshop will introduce participants to the fundamentals of filmmaking, equipping them with the skills they need to pursue their dreams. Below is a detailed outline of our preliminary curriculum -- Filmmaking from A-Z: What it takes to make a film from beginning to end • ‘Storytelling Fundamentals for Beginners’ Covers the essentials of crafting compelling narratives, from character development to plot structure. • ‘Photography’ (Prerequisite for Filmography) Participants will learn the basics of photography, focusing on composition, lighting, and visual storytelling. • ‘Filmography for Beginners’ Building on photography skills, this class will introduce participants to the basics of filming, including camera operation and shot composition. • ‘Camera Shots and Techniques’ (Advanced) A look at various camera angles, movements, and techniques used to create dynamic and engaging scenes. • ‘Lighting Theory for Film’ The principles of lighting in film, including how to set up and manipulate light to achieve the desired visuals. • ‘The Art of Sound’ (Multipart) A comprehensive introduction to sound design, focusing on the importance of audio in film and how to create an immersive soundscape. • ‘The Art of Sound II - Boom Technique’ How to use boom microphones and effectively capture clear dialogue and sound effects. • ‘The Art of Sound III - Lavalier TX/RX’ Proper use of Lavalier microphones for capturing audio in various settings. • ‘Audio Mixing’ (Multipart) Indepth course on mixing audio tracks to create a balanced and cohesive sound. • ‘Audio Mixing II - Foley Technique’ Learn the art of creating sound effects using everyday objects and materials. • ‘Broadcasting Live’ A practical introduction to live broadcasting, including the technical setup and production workflow. • ‘Post Production’ Overview of the post-production process including editing, color correction, and visual effects. • ‘Podcast Technology’ An exploration the technology and techniques behind creating professional-quality podcasts. • ‘Set Building’ The basics of constructing sets, from concept to completion. All classes are hands-on and taught by experienced professionals using state-of-the-art film equipment. We will also offer bespoke classes on an individual basis for those looking to deepen their skills in specific areas; for example, we will have an in-house creative team on hand to assist in the less-tangible aspects of filmmaking such as narrative-conceptualization, actor-specific communication, etc. Having said all of that, our intent is to work with our partners (yourself included, hopefully) in an organized manner that prioritizes logistics and emphasizes accountability. All production work will be scheduled meticulously, communicated emphatically, and we will not only provide peace of mind germane to the respect of any collaborative spaces but will also make ourselves and our equipment available to said partners if such a need arises; and regarding our equipment, we’ll make its use hassle-free by insuring everything and removing the strain of any potential liability. Above all else, we want to approach this community-development project with pure intent and clear boundaries. This ultimately brings me to my final pronouncement; something I couldn’t be more thrilled to announce: NeLA would like to debut itself to Los Angeles in grand fashion by presenting the inaugural NeLA Film Festival! Dates and other germane information will be released as further development takes place. The NeLA film festival will be a tangible manifestation of everything we as a collective seek to achieve – Art, inspired by human experience and all of its complexities, and sublimated in a way that engenders empathy and communication; something experiential and universal that aspires to make humanity feel cohesive again. We’re here for our peoples and the cultivation of their various forms of artistic expression, but we of course also stand strong with any/all peoples with the intent to create. We’re building an artistic community, one rooted near the parts of Los Angeles that are famished for it, and we hope you’ll be along for the adventure. David Feria Chicano Creative Society
